Florals In Oil

Florals are on the mind this week in the Sulis Studio and we’re currently unsure whether we’re expressing our love for flower paintings or just yearning for the first signs of spring. Either way, we definitely have enough wonderful floral and botanical studies to keep our spirits high until we see spring buds appearing. Whether it’s expressive bursts of colour or a subdued Mid Century style, we believe there is space for a floral arrangement to be hung on the walls of every home. This hand-selected group of oil paintings varies in style and technique but are all equally full of character and charm.

This floral array is a real show stopper. Swedish, Mid Century, Vibrant and gestural, this piece is ticking all the style boxes! There is so much drama in this painting that the flowers seem to dissolve into energetic motion in the upper left. A true show stopper. A. Kindberg - Swedish School 1984 Oil, Colours Of Summer

Here’s one that is sure to catch your eye. This dynamic study captures an array of flowers in a way that makes them jump right off the board. Full of vibrancy and movement, the artist doesn’t confint the flowers to a vase but spreads them across the composition to stretch and wind in wild, gestural brushstrokes. Gideon Kolb (1913-1984) - Austrian School 20th Century Oil, Flora No. 1

Mix an abstract composition and a muted palette together and you get this, a wonderfully stylish but expressive floral study. The artist captures the gentle colours of the background and makes a great ground for the splashes of pink splayed across to the surface, resembling sprawling roses. H. G. Foster - Mid 20th Century Oil, Floral Forms

Starting with one of our favourites, the rich textures in this still life study make for a unique and satisfying composition. Stuffed to the brim with vibrant Dahlias, the beautiful Constance Spry style vase exudes elegance. We are in awe of the way the artist has managed to capture the light bouncing of each petal, bringing out the vibrancy in the flowers. Kynaston Newbery - Mid 20th Century Oil, A Cacophony Of Dahlias

We love the way that the artist turns the humble house succulent into a thing of vibrant beauty. The tiny pink flowers, the stylised buds and the rich background all make for a dynamic and endearing composition, all centred around the much overlooked succulent! 20th Century Oil - Flowering Succulent

Florals don’t have to be raucous and in your face. This delicate and gestural Mid Century still life is perfect for a more neutral, paired back home, relying on form and movement to engage the eye. It’s pretty massive too! V. G. Fooks - Mid 20th Century Oil, Floral Explosion

Influenced heavily by the Scottish Colourists, Irene Lesley Main uses vibrant colours and stylised forms to create this dynamic study. There is a naive charm to this piece and we particularly like how it doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s the perfect burst of sunshine to brighten any room. Irene Lesley Main (b.1959) - 1989 Oil, Yellow Lilies
