The Autumn Edit
While it doesn’t quite seem possible that we have arrived at this time of the year already, the falling leaves and darker mornings have nudged us into the autumnal spirit. It’s been a taboo subject here in the studio for some time, met with a silent refusal to think about the upcoming colder days. Even so, autumn has happened upon us and we have completely forgotten that we were dutifully mourning the end of summer. Why, suddenly, do scented candles smell better? How is everything you could ever hope to watch appearing on TV? It must be time to bunker down. We’re looking at our houses and realising how much we want to be inside, nestled amongst our vintage paintings that somehow manage to bring the beauty of the outside in. Speaking of which, we’ve put together a selection of pieces that exude the autumnal feelings of crisp days, bountiful harvests and bejewelled landscapes. Here’s to a very cosy season, filled with wholesome days and plenty of art to get lost in!
We plan to spend our autumn days just like these cacti, basking in the autumn sun through the sturdy protection of a window. If the cat doesn’t get there first.
Paivio Westerlund Knighton (fl.1968-86) - Oil - Cacti at the Window
Now this is a lady whose ready to embrace the changing of the seasons. If you don’t mind us we’ll don our striped aprons and channel our 19th century milkmaid all autumn long. Exquisitely painted and lovingly presented in a gilt frame, this piece would make an accomplished addition to any collection, no matter the time of year.
A beautifully accurate depiction of those very late autumn sunsets, with just the last of the leaves on the trees.
John Brown (1887–1966) - Early 20th Century Oil Orange Light In Autumn
A subdued, stylish mid century piece with just the right amount of earthy tones to give it an autumnal look.
Augusta Marcon (1892-1980) - Mid 20th Century Oil The Estuary
We’re big fans of paintings that awaken the senses. Can’t you hear the crunch of the leaves as you walk towards the church, or have we spent too much time with this painting?
Patrick Lambert Larking (1907-1981) - Mid 20th Century Oil - Wooded Path
An all round wonderful still life. The opulent light, the view from the windowsill, the depth of the brushstrokes. We have no notes.
Pietro Sansalvadore (1892-1955) - 1925 Oil Sunflowers on a Turin Windowsill
What a view! We love the detail in this tranquil landscape scene.
Michael Crawley - Framed 20th Century Watercolour Autumn Morning
